The Longmont Museum presents masterworks from one of America’s most celebrated photographers. Edward Weston’s Chambered Nautilus and his Peppers series, as well as the sculptural nudes of his wife, Charis, are powerful 20^th-century images. This exhibition of prints made by the photographer spans Weston’s entire career, from early portraiture to his final landscape photo.

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012 - Cinco de Mayo: Patriotic Adventures of Cholo, Vato, and Pano

Cinco de Mayo is a collaborative exhibition by Dr. George Rivera and Tony Ortega celebrating Mexican culture and heritage. The exhibition features the text of their new bilingual children’s book Cinco de Mayo: Patriotic Adventures of Cholo, Vato, and Pano by Dr. Rivera and Tony Ortega’s illustrations. The bilingual exhibition follows the journey of Pano and his two dogs, Cholo and Vato, as they discover the history of the battle of Puebla, and discover why we celebrate the victory of the Mexican militia against the occupying French Army on the 5^th of May in 1862. 

Cinco de Mayo marks the sixth book produced by Dr. Rivera and Tony Ortega. The duo has been working together for more than twenty years. Their first story, Jumping Over the Pyramid, was published in 1992 spawning a successful series of bilingual stories. Each story follows Cholo, Vato and Pano on their adventures, which address issues of identity, life, death, culture and heritage.  Tony Ortega’s hand-colored etchings illustrate Dr. Rivera’s bi-lingual text in rhyming couplets. The exhibition will allow the viewer to experience the story of Cinco de Mayo with Cholo, Vato and Pano as they walk through the gallery. 

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012 - The Anatomy of Improvisation: Movement Improvisation for all levels

By investigating one’s own movement potential, students will cultivate mindfulness, creative expression, and spontaneity in their dancing. The development of individual presence and awareness of the dynamics of ensemble will be emphasized throughout the class. This class will strive to build a community of dancers who celebrate taking risks, exploring the unknown, and openly communicating with one another as we practice the various forms of improvisational dance in a physical, creative, and fun environment that fosters self-expression through kinesthetic experience.

No previous experience in dance is necessary to join these classes. All levels and abilities are welcome.

NOTE: The Anatomy of Improvisation is an on-going class that has been meeting on and off for the past 9 years. This is a wonderful group of people who continue to search and wonder at the unlimited possibility of dance. The age range for this class is 20-80. I have had the incredible honor and pleasure of working with this group since it began at The Boulder Shambhala Meditation Center in 2003. If you are interested in joining us, please just come. This is a particularly warm and welcoming group (and there is almost always chocolate!!!) and it is always fun to have new people come to this class with a different and new perspective concerning improvisational practices.

Focusing on formal elements of color as light, weight, structure and composition we will develop how to paint and draw the figure with a live model. 

Through the relationships between the artist and model and figure to ground we will focus on placement and space. 

We will look at a variety of painters who used the figure as their primary subject matter throughout their careers and the differences in their use of composition.  Matisse, Picasso, Richard Diebenkorn, David Park and Alice Neel.

This is a rare opportunity to learn Persian dance, a completely unique form of Middle Eastern dance.  We will focus on the classical dance of Persia (ancient Iran), which includes exquisite arm and hand gestures and graceful poses, with playful shoulder movements, soft hip undulations, and traveling steps, performed to 68 time signatures. The beautiful arm positions of Persian classical dance influenced other styles of dance including Raqs Sharqi (“belly dance”) and North Indian Kathak.
There will be optional opportunities for performance in May and throughout the summer.

Now through mid May, ALL the usual dance classes at Hamsa Arts will be focusing on this beautiful form of dance. Classes may be taken as drop-in or punch cards are available for reduced prices.

Tom Cannon is offering a class in pottery making at his studio in South Boulder for anyone to explore and have fun with clay. The class starts off with hand-building, covers simple decorating techniques and also includes the opportunity to use the potter’s wheel. Participants will glaze their work, have it fired and feel proud of what they take home. Prior experience is not required, but those with experience can enjoy being challenged.

In this weekly class we’ll explore ways of sourcing material for solo performance and ways of putting our work into our bodies and voices, and into the performance space. We’ll write with our pens, our bodies and our voices, drawing from a variety of movement, writing and physical theater exercises in order to create embodied performances that tell our stories and speak our truths. The class will culminate in an informal performance of our work together. You don't have to be fearless to take this class! All fears, trepidations, beating hearts and wobbly knees warmly welcomed and gently invited to the table!

Come play with your marvelous voice, your exquisite body, your ordinary stories, your reliable mistakes, your words whispered from behind closed doors, your name shouted outloud from a mountaintop.  For performers and non-performers, writers and non-writers.

Johanna Walker has been making original solo and ensemble theater, dance and improvisation works for over 15 years. She holds an MFA in Theater: Contemporary Performance from Naropa University and has performed throughout the US and Canada in theaters, studios, street corners, bathrooms and subway stations. She's taught writing and performance-making to kids, teenagers, senior adults and everyone in between, and loves what happens when we witness each other telling our stories and being our full human selves.

Applications are now being accepted for a first-ever, highly visible competition and community-based exhibition in Boulder, Colorado featuring works of art created with or on reclaimed doors…any kind of door made of any kind of material.  The works of art may still function as doors or may be transformed into another functional or visual art object.  A $20 gift certificate to the ReSource Yard, a source for reclaimed doors and other building materials in Boulder County, is provided with completed applications (please register early to take advantage of this).

Cash and other prizes will be awarded, and works may be sold in the Bold Doors auction.  Jurors will include executive directors of arts organizations/galleries, prominent local artists and art buyers. Accepted works will be displayed at multiple venues in the Boulder area, with an exhibition guide published on-line and in selected high-traffic locations.  Early entries are invited for display during the promotion of the competition, providing more public display time for professional artists.

SMART (Sustainable Materials + Art) is a new initiative started by the Center For Resource Conservation to celebrate and promote re-use of hard-to-recycle objects, expand market opportunities for artists working with reclaimed materials, and reflect the value that Boulder places on sustainability in public and private works of art.

A student team competition is also offered, with entries exhibited May 4^th to 6^th,2012.

 The Adams County Visual Arts Commission is conducting a competition among Colorado artists, or teams of artists, to create a multi-medium, mural style History Wall, perhaps using a mixture of such mediums as photographs, paintings, collage art, news accounts, documents, etc., in two 25' x 7' recessed alcoves and 70' of intervening wall space in our government center in Brighton.  The budget for the project is $92,500 and Stage 1 submissions requiring statement of interest, specific qualifications and examples of relevant past work, are due by June 2nd.  Three Semi-finalists will be selected to work with historians engaged by the Commission to produce concept specific proposals by October 1st.  Contact rsgrant@msn.com for an electronic copy of the Call For Entries.
