Kathleen's exhibit, "Sharp Things" will be on display through March. Kathleen's work is based on items she sees in the newspaper which she says "tend to burrow into my subconscious like wayward cactus thorns and continue to prick at me, providing an underlying level of unsettlement."  Evolving from photographs, her completed watercolor and color pencil compositions are unusual combinations/contradictions between nature and the man-made world.

Three Powerful Shows of Abstract Art Debut at The Dairy

Abstract portraiture, finding evocative imagery in the mundane and chaotic, and mankind’s emotional dance with nature, are the directions of three artists who have created powerful abstract works in different media. William Stoehr’s “Facebook,” Brad Hatch’s “Extraordinary Images of Ordinary Things” and Steve W. Whitehead’s “Serendipity: Unexpected Paths to Expression,” open in the galleries at The Dairy Center for the Arts with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, February 19th. 

As president of National Geographic Maps, William Stoehr’s career life was the structured, technical world of cartography. Four years ago, he mapped a new course for himself by leaving the publishing world and turning to visual art. The individual portraits in “Facebook” are acrylic over charcoal on canvases that measure 48 x 36 inches. The viewer is immediately struck with the intensity of each subject’s eyes. Well executed portraits are dramatized with bold sweeps of red across these faces, animating them in a way that is moving and haunting.

Whitehead once made his living as a graphic designer, producing hard-edged identity marks and typography for corporate clients. Turning to fine art, he now transforms the cast off detritus of product marketing and photographic images of a chaotic urban landscape into vividly colorful, large-scale mixed media art. Whitehead’s work is highly abstract, though the subtle precision of the work in his “circle series” (part of this exhibit) give testimony to his graphic skills. 

Brad Hatch began his career life in the complex world of multi-channel music recording. His path quickly turning to exploratory techniques in music and early performance art. In “Extraordinary Images,” Hatch takes photographs of man-made objects undergoing nature’s ‘reclamation processes’ of rust and decay, then manipulates them in Photoshop®, playing with contrast, hue and color saturation to create transcendent abstract images that resemble paintings. 

The artists present an artists’ talk March 10th from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. These exhibits will remain at The Dairy through March 26th. Visits to the galleries and artists’ talks are free to the public. Artist Reception, February 5, 2010, 5:30 – 7:30 p. m., free and open to the public

Every painting and photograph in this new collection at St. John's Art Gallery is a dive headlong into Wonderland. Bob Avery, Mike Brouse, Nancy Myer, and Joan Wolbier bring talent and years of training together to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. Avery seeks to evoke strong feelings from subjects that fascinate him. He brings his painterly eye to landscapes and scenes of daily life in far-flung corners of the globe. Brouse applies impressionistic techniques to ponder simple pleasures in his series of homages to the bicycle in Boulder. Myer uses her camera to luxuriate in unique perspectives on flowers, inspired by the colorful canvases of Georgia O'Keefe. Finally, Wolbier captures rugged Colorado landscapes in watercolors that dramatize the play of light and shadow on distant mountains and the mirrored stillness of trees reflected in serene lakes.  This is one collection that offers something new and surprising from frame to frame. At the public reception, Laurie Dameron, singer, songwriter, guitarist, will provide music to enhance your viewing experience.

PUPPET SUPER HEROES!

Ages 7-12
Create your own puppet Super Hero! This hands-on class sparks the imagination by exploring the fantastical world of puppetry. Every-day materials come alive as students create their own super hero character, complete with unique puppet voice, walk, costume, and “powers”. Students will get a feel for the technique behind the play, and will have the opportunity to be the writer or director of their own short scenes or stories. There will be a short, informal performance on the last day of class!

The Longmont Artists’ Guild and the Boulder Art Association are requesting entries for a members’ show to be held at the Boulder County Fairgrounds from June 10-13, 2010. The LAG and the BAA jointly host a yearly members’ show that includes 70 different artists in photography, oils, watercolor, pastels, etc. Deadline for entry forms is Monday, May 3, 2010 by 5pm.

Four pieces of artwork and unlimited bin work can be entered. The exhibit will be judged by Diane Perry and ribbons and cash will be awarded in all categories.

Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art presents the work of Beverly McIver, Steve Steele and Pattie Lee Becker. McIver presents “Face to Face”, self-portraits and portraits of the artist’s mother and sister that reveal the complexity of family relationships. Steve Steele’s installation, “Relational Fabric in Space and Other Works for the Dark,” examines the relationships of hundreds of objects; 333 in dazzling arrays. Becker’s exhibition, “Ropes,” explores the simplicity and intricacies of form and the relationship between the media of drawing and sculpture.

Explore ways to incorporate a variety of liquid and dry materials, special tools and an assortment of papers and techniques to add exciting textures and special effects to your paintings.  We will learn to ‘think outside the box’ and experiment with materials that we find around us. Come ready to play and explore your creativity and imagination. Class consists of 6 sessions including, but not limited to, the following: Liquid Aids- water, frisket, rubbing alcohol and opaque white; Dry Helpers-salt, sand, plastic wrap, cardboard; Paper- 140#, 300#, hot and cold pressed; Special Tools-drinking straws, stamping, natural ingredients; Other Art Supplies-ink, colored pencils, crayons, markers; Special techniques-scrubbing out, spattering, scummbling, scraping out.  Some painting experience helpful.

For beginning, intermediate or advanced art students, this weekly two hour class introduces you to a contemplative approach to art making, color theory and composition.  The purpose of the class is to assist you in discovering your personal style.  The process can be translated by you to other mediums, but we use the oil pastels in class so we can complete on drawing by the end of class.

Art is the perfect metaphor for the contemplative experience.  As you begin to draw with the oil pastels you quickly discover you can trust your inner intuitive process to create a drawing you had no idea you could complete when you began.  You will explore ways to access your creativity, support your artistic style and express your heart-centered perspective in a supportive environment.

Suzanne has taught art retreats and classes since 1992.  She combines a BA degree is philosophy with a BFA degree in studio art to create a new approach to art making.

Materials Fee:  You can bring your own pastels to class or purchase a box of 36 oil pastels for $7.  The cost of good drawing paper is included in the class cost.

The Dairy Center for the Arts invites artists and arts organizations from the United States and beyond to submit proposals for individual and group shows of any and all visual art mediums, for the year 2011.

In addition, through The Dairy’s Colorado Community Curator (CCC) program, any Colorado resident may submit a proposal for a show which includes the work of artists from any state or any country. The person submitting the proposal will be considered the exhibitor and will be responsible for the exhibit as described in “Legal Agreement” in the prospectus.

Boulder's Dairy Center for the Arts is a non-profit cultural arts organization housed in the historic Watts-Hardy Dairy building. Each year 150,000 people come to The Dairy to experience visual and performing arts through exhibits, classes, workshops, and performances.

An exhibition of digital photography by Karen Divine is on display in Gallery I of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) March 1 through 27. The artist creates her dreamlike, composite photography by stacking colors and ideas, forms and stories, piecing various parts together and overlapping them to create beauty that is often overlooked by studying the obvious. Her work expresses, through forms and textures, the subtlety of influences that exist and represents her personal experience of the world.
