The challenge and the beauty of Taiko stems from the combination of percussion, dance and martial art. As in martial art study, Boulder Taiko’s teaching method and essence is based upon the four basic elements, Mind, Skill, Body, and Manner.

KOKORO:    SPIRIT - Discipline of mind, self-control and spirit.
WAZA:          SKILL - Musical skills, physical expression and rhythm.
KARADA:    BODY - Discipline of physical strength, power and stamina.
REI:          ETIQUETTE - Communication manner, harmony, language, unity of spirit        between players and the drums.

This class is designed for beginner and Advanced beginner level. All students learn the basic grip, stance and movement prior to practicing fundamental drills designed to learn basic drumming techniques. The class starts with a routine of full body stretches and the use of voice is practiced throughout class. One method unique teaching style is that “Kuchi-Shoka”, students sing the rhythms without the music score so that the entire body, not just the brain, learns the rhythm.

The Dairy Center for the Arts, Boulder CO, celebrates Boulder's two-wheeler culture of bicycle fanatacism, fitness, and competition with a juried exhibition of Bicycle Art. Oil Painters of America will hold its Twenty First Annual National Exhibition of Representational Oil Paintings, June 22 through July 21, 2012  at Evergreen Fine Art Gallery in Evergreen, Colorado.  

Approximately 30 awards will be given with a total value estimated in excess of $75,000 including a $25,000 Best of Show.  Juror of Awards is Quang Ho.  A full-color catalog will be available. 

Deadline for mailed-in slide submissions is February 10, 2012.   Deadline for on-line submissions is February 24, 2012. 

To enter, artists must reside in the U.S., Canada or Mexico and be a current member of OPA at an annual fee of $60.  National Exhibition entry fee:  $30 for the first entry, $15 for the second. Colorado has been the backdrop for over 500 movies since 1898. Whether it was for early silent films, Westerns and ski movies, or Stan Brackhage’s famous works of avant-garde art cinema, Hollywood came to Colorado to set the scene. View original movie posters and footage of more than 100 years of Colorado films set in areas such as Golden, Morrison, Cañon City and throughout the high country. This exhibit is also supplemented with material highlighting Boulder's own movie history including the Boulder International Film Festival, The Shoot Out Boulder and materials from The Cove, Catch and Release, The Glenn Miller Story and the most recently filmed, The Mind’s Eye.

Applications are now being accepted for a first-ever, highly visible competition and community-based exhibition in Boulder, Colorado featuring works of art created with or on reclaimed doors…any kind of door made of any kind of material.  The works of art may still function as doors or may be transformed into another functional or visual art object.  A $20 gift certificate to the ReSource Yard, a source for reclaimed doors and other building materials in Boulder County, is provided with completed applications (please register early to take advantage of this).

Cash and other prizes will be awarded, and works may be sold in the Bold Doors auction.  Jurors will include executive directors of arts organizations/galleries, prominent local artists and art buyers. Accepted works will be displayed at multiple venues in the Boulder area, with an exhibition guide published on-line and in selected high-traffic locations.  Early entries are invited for display during the promotion of the competition, providing more public display time for professional artists.

SMART (Sustainable Materials + Art) is a new initiative started by the Center For Resource Conservation to celebrate and promote re-use of hard-to-recycle objects, expand market opportunities for artists working with reclaimed materials, and reflect the value that Boulder places on sustainability in public and private works of art.

A student team competition is also offered, with entries exhibited May 4^th to 6^th,2012.
