Thursday, June 14th, 2012 - Storytelling with Photography - Workshop

TIME: 6pm to 9pm
COST: $69 for BDA members, $89 for non-members

Every picture tells a story, or so says Rod Stewart.

Whatever your ambitions and motivations may be, this is a class for photographers who want to harness the camera's ability to tell stories. It makes absolutely no difference whether you are fully outfitted with the latest SLR equipment or are working with the simplest point-and-shoot. Telling good photographic stories transcends equipment.

This class may not transform you into a globe-trotting photojournalist, but it will spark your imagination. Who wouldn't love to have a more dynamic way of using their camera to document a trip or special event...or even the growth and development of your family over time?

Great pictures tell stories by capturing both information and emotion. Unfortunately, great pictures are hard to come by, even for the best photographers, because they require a combination of competence, preparation and opportunity - three things that rarely present themselves concurrently.

As a result, storytelling - visual storytelling - is more often achieved through combining photographs into "picture stories." Simple, right? Well, no, actually. As most professional photojournalists will tell you, picture stories are among the most difficult assignments.

In this class we will learn what it takes to create a successful picture story. You will learn the key components to dramatically improve your ability to tell a story through photography and retain the interest of your audience. You will learn how to think about, shoot and edit a picture story for maximum impact. We will also discuss presentation - single pages, books and multimedia - and how it can impact the way you pursue your story. This workshop will help you harness the power of great photography to tell great stories.

PLEASE REGISTER at the BDA website. Boulder Digital Arts offers affordable training in digital media from professionals working in the field.

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012 - The Anatomy of Improvisation: Movement Improvisation for all levels

By investigating one’s own movement potential, students will cultivate mindfulness, creative expression, and spontaneity in their dancing. The development of individual presence and awareness of the dynamics of ensemble will be emphasized throughout the class. This class will strive to build a community of dancers who celebrate taking risks, exploring the unknown, and openly communicating with one another as we practice the various forms of improvisational dance in a physical, creative, and fun environment that fosters self-expression through kinesthetic experience.

No previous experience in dance is necessary to join these classes. All levels and abilities are welcome.

NOTE: The Anatomy of Improvisation is an on-going class that has been meeting on and off for the past 9 years. This is a wonderful group of people who continue to search and wonder at the unlimited possibility of dance. The age range for this class is 20-80. I have had the incredible honor and pleasure of working with this group since it began at The Boulder Shambhala Meditation Center in 2003. If you are interested in joining us, please just come. This is a particularly warm and welcoming group (and there is almost always chocolate!!!) and it is always fun to have new people come to this class with a different and new perspective concerning improvisational practices.
