BCAA Art on the Walls exhibit "
Urban Cowboys" featuring the works of Justin Davis Davanzo.
My intention with this work is to bring us to a more sensitive place from the ground up. If we can find beauty in the small things around us by becoming more aware of color, shape, texture and purpose, imagine how we will begin to act and think as human beings. Because this, I feel, is our ultimate goal - to find beauty in each other from the smallest detail to the largest. How often do we actually notice the small minute details of our mother, husband, friend? How can we be better at inspecting our world and those around us so that we may better ourselves? That is my study and in staring at a fire hydrant, the idea of a lone, brave, stalwart, quiet vision of myself arose; one that would always be there, watching, caring, listening, observing.
As a photographer I have developed an eye for the detail of the everyday things that make up our concrete world. The things we pass by 100 times a day and probably never notice, but they make up our urban landscape and color it with life. I see the special oddities that seem to appear without planning, but are perfectly designed and placed, but not for the sake of beauty as we know it. The simple objects that are beautiful in shape and color and that take on personalities of their own - like the fire hydrant standing through all times and weather, little cowboys in the world, my urban cowboys. Like the small torn ribbon hanging on rusted barbed wire, shocked with red, the puddle in the deep blue chair, the bright cone in the snow - the moments of odd coincidence and fashionable intangible makeup that could never be planned but just are. This is my lens and my eye and that is what I see.
I keep my pictures small because one must approach them and get close in; just the way I take my photos and see the images in my lens. I want to share my process and my results with the viewer and hopefully the next time they are out walking, they will see the cowboys in the landscape.
