BCAA Art on the Walls exhibit "
Redolent Reminiscence" featuring the works of Julie Gerleman.
During my travels in southern Thailand, I was enchanted by a simple little ritual I witnessed time and time again. Every morning the women would gather dozens of plumeria flowers and place them artfully into ceramic pots and dishes filled with water. Large pots, tiny pots - they were everywhere you look! Their fragrant little masterpieces were an echo of nature's own luxuriance strewn all over the land.
These flower paintings are my humble attempt to submerge myself in the memory of that tiny piece of heaven.
I have often wondered why I paint, only to have the answer elude me before I understood it. But then it occurred to me the answer was too obvious to be easily recognized. Mark Twain once said that authors should write what they know about. If I were giving similar advice to painters it would be to paint what they love.
