Art on the Walls: Steve Zimmermann
Venice is perhaps the most over-photographed city on the planet, but it's also an inexhaustible source of inspiration for an artist: the sheer implausibility of enterprise, carried out over centuries, has imbued Venice with layers of meaning and a complexity that never fail to engage. In this show, I've chosen to focus on Venice during the hours between sunset and sunrise, when the waves of tourists recede and you can almost hear the city breathe a sigh of relief. My photography spans a wide range of subject matter and techniques, from traditional landscape and studio photography to semi-abstracts of architectural, landscape and aerial subjects. I am a pilot and a musician, an engineer and an artist; when asked, I explain my varied tastes and interests by telling people I have a short attention span. In the studio I may approach a subject as figure, landscape or architecture, all in teh same session; similarly, I may approach an architectrual subject as landscape, sculpture or abstract. That's because I photograph not just to create images that I hope viewers find compelling, but essentially as a means of understanding the world around me. When I'm behind the camera I experience a place differently, observing the interplay of people with their environment in a way that's detached, yet intimate. I try to record the telling detail, the colors and textures of a scene that will evoke the same response when viewing an image that I experience at the moment I tripped the shutter. With the maturity of digital photography and printing I am now in control of the entire process from capture to final print. All images are captured digitally with Canon D-SLR bodies and lenses, then edited and printed in my studio on an Epson Stylus Pro 7800 digital inkjet photo printer
