Cultural Sensitivity and Competency Training

Registration is closed for this event
The goal of this training is to foster culturally competent leaders and facilitators who will be effective in working within the arts community in Boulder County. The workshop will be led by Johanna B. Maes, Ph.D, faculty with the Ethnic Living and Learning Community Program at University of Colorado Boulder.

In this highly informative and interactive training, we will be discussing the Cultural Competency Continuum- its origins, why it is important, and note where you place yourself on the Continuum and why. We will discuss and discover why this tool is important when working with diverse populations in our world, especially as a volunteer within Boulder County. We will also discuss some of the areas of oppression within our world as they appear in the “isms” that we face—(racism, sexism, classism, etc.) while also discovering where our various forms of privilege can contribute to the powers of oppression.

Dr. Johanna B. Maes is a professor of Multicultural Leadership at the University of Colorado Boulder and also an independent education consultant. She has over 20 years of experience working with diverse audiences (school groups, nonprofit organizations, government entities, etc.) where she teaches about inclusion, diversity, and multiculturalism in a rapidly changing society. As a cultural competency trainer and professor, Dr. Maes prides herself in including her audience as active participants within her pedagogy where she values their personal narratives and experiences and how they contribute to creating a cultural competent world.
