Business of Arts: Creating Successful Promotional Partnerships

Wednesday, January 25

Boulder Creek Room, Boulder Public Library, 1001 Arapahoe Ave

Registration and networking 11 - 11:30 am
Workshop 11:30am - 1pm

Let’s talk about what it takes to build successful promotional partnerships in the community. What businesses should you approach for promotional partnerships? FOMWhich ones are the most likely to partner with you? How are promotional partnerships different from sponsorships, how are they similar, and how can the two approaches work together?

Presented by Cindy Sewell Hohman of Focus on Marketing. Cindy has been working in the arts for nearly a decade. With experience in small arts organizations, large cultural institutions, and everything in between, she brings a wealth of experience to the table.

Artists & Athletes: BCAA and the Bolder Boulder 2017

Request for Proposal Now Open through February 28, 2017 at 5 pm

For 2017, BCAA will again be able to offer three artists or art organizations a stipend of $150 for performing or exhibiting their work along the Bolder Boulder 10K course on Monday, Memorial Day, May 29, 2017. Tent, table, and chairs will be provided. You may request a specific location in your proposal, but final determinations are at the discretion of the Course Entertainment Director of the Bolder Boulder.

You and/or your organization can also participate by walking or running in costume, as long as you don't impede the efforts of other walkers/runners. If you enroll through BCAA, we can offer you a discounted registration fee.

Community Arts Fund Recipient - Makena Sneed

$500 Grant Awarded December 2016

Congratulations to Makena Sneed on being awarded the latest Community Art Fund grant to help support her project, a new immersive dance piece, “Sonder.” Sneed's project will "transport you into an ethereal labyrinth that welcomes you into the life of a young artist who is standing at the crossroads of her youth. Sonder invites you to engage with performers and witness captivating choreography-- all performed by professional artists under the age of eighteen." Sneed is currently running a Kickstarter campaign that reached their first goal of raising enough to rent the warehouse space needed. Additional funds will create the intricacies necessary to bring the Sonder journey to life in July of this year.

When assessing applicants for the CAF, BCAA panelists are particularly interested in funding projects in which $500 will have a significant impact as well as ones that speak to BCAA's core values of being inclusive, innovative, and accessible. This is the perfect opportunity for projects that involve risk-taking and experimental ideas. Independent artists and emerging organizations are encouraged to apply.

Please read the guidelines or contact the BCAA office if you have any questions.

Boulder Arts Week 2017

Submit your event to the Boulder Arts Week Calendar

March 31-April 8

BCAA is proud to be a lead collaborator again for Boulder Arts Week, now in its 4th year. Are you an artist or arts organization that would like to participate? All are welcome! It's up to each artist or arts organization to schedule and produce their own event, but Director Emily Harrison and her staff will help you promote it.

Start by adding your event to BAW's calendar. You can do that here. Once your event is submitted and approved, you'll be added to the list of participants on BAW's websiteBoulder Arts Week and BCAA's calendars are linked, so your event will automatically show up on both calendars. You can also find out about volunteering for Boulder Arts Week on the website.

Some of the previous years' memorable arts experiences were in unexpected locations: bookstores, churches, wineries, and even a hair studio. Given the scale of Boulder's arts community, the major limiting factor for Boulder Arts Week 2017 is space! Please consider opening your doors during Boulder Arts Week to the artists who make Boulder vibrant and exciting! If you have a space to offer, please email Emily Harrison.

Who's in the Limelight?

Madge Montgomery, Artistic Director
Theater Company of Lafayette

Madge Montgomery became involved with Theater Company of Lafayette in the fall of 2000, shortly after moving to Colorado from the Seattle area (she has an MFA from the University of Washington). She fell in love with the Mary Miller Theater and considers it a magical and inviting performance space. She has been the Artistic Director for TCL for fifteen years, where they perform a wide-range of material, from classics to contemporary gems. She is passionate about bringing new works to East Boulder County. In the past ten years, TCL has premiered more than 120 new plays, both one acts and full length scripts. About thirty of the scripts have gone on to be published, and plays that had their first start at TCL are now performed all across the country.

Madge is very excited to work with Theater Esprit Asia, and to have their award-winning production of Coming to America perform on TCL's stage. Billed as "two solo immigration dramas filled with humor and grace," this timely and important production will run January 13 -22. In Boat Person, Peter Trinh recounts the bloody fall of Saigon, the harrowing American evacuation from South Vietnam, his parents’ escape to freedom against the perils of the high seas facing storms and pirates, their near starvation at refugee camps and finally finding safe haven in the United States. In Antecedents, Maria Cheng recollects the Americanization of a precocious Chinese teenager as she embraces new heroes while never forsaking her ancestors.

This production has been invited to be performed at the National Festival of the American Association of Community Theatres in June of 2017.

BCAA Featured Venue - Bricolage Gallery

The BCAA Facilities Directory is a great resource for finding meeting and event space in Boulder County.  It is a comprehensive guide that lists dozens of auditoriums, dance studios, non-traditional spaces and outdoor settings.

This Month's Featured Venue:

Bricoloage Gallery at Art Parts Creative Reuse Center, 2870 Bluff St., Boulder
Contact: Denise Perrault, Executive Director (720) 379-5328/ info@artpartsboulder.org

Host your next private event at this 2310 square foot attractive art gallery. The space is available outside of regular business hours, which means Sundays and Mondays from 11 am - 8 pm and Tuesdays - Saturdays from 5:30 pm - 10 pm (except Thursdays 7 pm - 10 pm). The Gallery has its own large table that seats 10, space for additional tables, and a kitchen area with large countertop, full-size fridge and microwave. The rental fee is $48 per hour.

Art Parts has exhibitions scheduled regularly, so the gallery walls, tables, and pedestals are not removable during private functions. There are, however, two or three days between exhibits when the gallery is nearly empty, if your dates are flexible. The space is excellent for private art or craft parties to celebrate a birthday or anniversary. A staff person is there so that guests can buy whatever materials they need for their projects.
