Attending the Evergreen Chorale’s holiday concert has become a tradition for music lovers from throughout the Denver community. Artistic and musical director Christine Gaudreau has crafted an uplifting program drawing music from a range of cultures and time periods that will resonate with people of all backgrounds and faiths. This year’s concert is built around Benjamin Britten’s “A Ceremony of Carols”, a lively composition evoking the joy of the holiday season. Britten used the text of The English Galaxy of Shorter Poems to create 11 movements for choir and harp which are deeply moving. Additional pieces to be performed include El Yivneh Hagalil, composed by Peter Sozio and based on a traditional Jewish folk song; Arruru, a Spanish-language lullaby to the baby Jesus; Carol From An Irish Cabin by Dale Wood; and Glow by contemporary composer Eric Whitacre, as well as more familiar carols such as Deck the Halls.

The Chorale is delighted to be joined by harpist Don Hilsberg and flutist Gretchen Moritz for this concert. Mr. Hilsberg graduated from the Manhattan School of Music, and has been an active performer for over 40 years, including as Principal Harp in the Denver Chamber Orchestra (1984-1994) and the Colorado Springs Philharmonic Orchestra (2000-2016). Ms. Moritz recently played with guitarist Michael Mandrell at the Chorale’s July 4 performance and the Chorale’s first concert in this season’s Shining Stars series in July. She teaches music to middle schoolers at Rocky Mountain Academy of Evergreen, and also is the director of Rocky Mountain Youth Musicals, an after-school enrichment program. Assistant choir director Rebecca Sarian will conduct three carols, and Ms. Gaudreau will conduct the balance of the program.

The Evergreen Chorale recently received 41 nominations in 14 categories for the 2017 BroadwayWorld Denver awards for its regional premiere of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”, performed this fall at Center Stage. From February 23 – March 11, 2018, the Chorale will present Company, a musical by Stephen Sondheim, at Center Stage, under the direction of Christine Kahane with musical direction by Christine Gaudreau.  This spring the Chorale will be joined by the Evergreen Chamber Orchestra to present Mozart’s Requiem at Central Presbyterian Church (May 12) and Rockland Community Church (May 13).
