Michael A. Franklin, chair of the Naropa University graduate art therapy program, has practiced and taught in various academic and clinical settings since 1981. The exhibition Small Places to Pray: Silence, Surfaces, and Clay Reliquariesfocuses on a series of intimate clay shrine-like formations while the photographs displayed convey an austere minimalism of beckoning surfaces.  The author of numerous articles, he is an international lecturer and founder of the Naropa Community Art Studio in 2001, a project dedicated to researching service as a spiritual practice, training socially engaged artists, and serving marginalized community members through the studio-arts. Michael’s research focuses on integrating art-based research methods with contemplative practices. He is the author of: Art as Contemplative Practice: Expressive Pathways to the SELF published by SUNY Press.
