It's Only a Play

Regional Premiere of the New Broadway Edition!
by Terrence McNally
Directed by Katie Mangett

It's the opening night of The Golden Egg on Broadway and the wealthy producer, Julia Budder, is throwing a lavish party in her lavish townhouse. Downstairs the celebrities are pouring in, but the real action is upstairs where the playwright Peter Austin, the director and the actors have staked themselves out in the producer's bedroom, waiting for the reviews to come in. Virginia Noyes, the star of the show, is taking drugs. James Wicker, a now a successful TV actor who turned down the lead in the play, is relieved and secretly thrilled about the bad reviews that arrive. And, although Ira Drew is a theater critic, he is very critical of the theater because he has no talent to actually participate, despite his secretly writing plays.

"This show is without a doubt hilariously, sidesplittingly funny…These are among the funniest lines to roll off a stage in years…It’s Only A Play deserves only a rave." —NY Times.

The cast includes Perry Lewis (Peter Austin), Anne Myers (Julia Budder), Michael O'Shea (Ira Drew), Leroy Leonard (Frank Finger), Kelly Uhlenhopp (Virginia Noyes), Bernie Cardell (James Wicker) and Seth Palmer Harris (Gus Head).

Terrence McNally has been described as "a probing and enduring dramatist" and "one of the greatest contemporary playwrights the theater world has yet produced." He has received the Tony Award for Best Play for Love! Valour! Compassion! and Master Class, as well as the Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical for Kiss of the Spider Woman and Ragtime. He is a recipient of the Dramatists Guild Lifetime Achievement Award as well as the Lucille Lortel Lifetime Achievement Award.  Industry Night, Monday, June 19 at 7:30 p.m.  Tickets are $24 - $30.
