Boulder Taiko is a community-based Japanese taiko drumming organization founded in Boulder, Colorado, in 2006 by Artistic Director Julia Misawa. Our mission is to preserve and share the art of taiko through performances, classes, workshops, and cultural education programs for people of all ages and backgrounds.
Boulder Taiko offers year-round classes for children and adults, school enrichment programs, community workshops, and public performances throughout Colorado. The ensemble has appeared at theaters, festivals, libraries, schools, universities, and cultural events, promoting cultural exchange, artistic excellence, and community connection through the powerful energy of taiko drumming.
Under the direction of Julia Misawa, a former member of San Francisco Taiko Dojo(https://www.sftaiko.com) under Grand Master Seiichi Tanaka, Boulder Taiko has presented performances and educational programs throughout Colorado for nearly two decades.
Signature events include the Colorado Taiko Summit, founded in 2009 and reimagined as the Harmony of Rhythms concert series in 2024, along with collaborations with local and international artists, educational workshops, and community performances that bring together diverse audiences through rhythm, culture, and artistic exchange.
In 2026, Boulder Taiko celebrates its 20th Anniversary with Harmony of Rhythms: One Legacy, featuring nationally recognized guest artists and collaborative performances that unite Japanese taiko, African drumming, and Latin music traditions.
