The Family Dog Denver: Rock Posters and Music in Denver 1967-68

February 6 – May 10, 2015

The Byers-Evans House Gallery will feature an exhibition of original rock posters from The Family Dog. An opening reception will be held during the February First Friday Art Walk from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. The public is welcome to attend and admission to the gallery is always free.

In 1967, Chet Helms and San Francisco’s The Family Dog hippie collective opened a satellite concert venue in Denver, echoing their iconic San Francisco location, the Avalon Ballroom.  It was Denver's scene for the best known bands of the era, featuring concerts by the Doors, Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead, and Van Morrison.  Concerts were promoted by poster art created by San Francisco’s leading psychedelic artists, including Rick Griffin, Victor Moscoso, Stanley Mouse, Alton Kelley, and Bob Schnepf. All sixteen 1967 Family Dog Denver posters will be displayed, augmented by a reconstructed lost poster design by Bob Fried and a number of posters made for 1968 Denver concerts.

Curated by Professor Scott B. Montgomery of the University of Denver, the exhibition highlights the artistry of these posters, and places them within their historical context of rock music, counterculture identity, and conflicts with local police. The original poster art is courtesy of long time collector and dealer Mike Storiem.

In addition to the posters, photographs of the bands by Lisa Law will be on display. Beginning in the early 1960s, with her new Honeywell Pentax camera in hand and working as an assistant to The Kingston Trio manager Frank Werber, Lisa captured the spirit of the 1960s and her passion for photography grew into a profession. Portraying many of the bands included on the posters, Lisa’s photographs work in concert with the posters to create a portrait of art, music, and counterculture in Denver 1967-68.

A gallery talk will be given by Professor Scott B. Montgomery beginning at 6:30 p.m. during the March 6, First Friday Art Walk reception. The exhibit will remain on view through May 10, and is being presented in combination with the 1968 exhibition at the History Colorado Center.
