Gwen Marston: Contemporary Quilts

Gwen Marston has been one of the country’s most influential quiltmakers for three decades. With her famously “liberated” approach to patchwork, the author of 26 books has made quilting an accessible, joyful process for countless quilters. She’s known for creating exuberant, contemporary pieces which always pay tribute to the antique quilts that first captured her imagination. The vibrant, solid colors Gwen has chosen for the pieces in this exhibit have the visual impact of Amish quilts, while the improvisational designs remain uniquely her own.

If there’s such a thing as quilt royalty, Gwen Marston is it. Although her quilts have been shown across the country and as far away as Japan and New Zealand, this is the first time a significant exhibition of Gwen’s work will appear in the Rocky Mountain region.

Native American Portraits by Patsy Heacox

Patsy Heacox has been called a storyteller in textile. She says history was written by the victors, and through her artwork she intends to tell the other side of the story. “There is so much to honor in Native American peoples, their history, and their beliefs,” says Patsy. “Among many admirable traits, they were the first conservationists in North America.”

Museum visitors will encounter monumental, often life-size portraits surrounded by meticulously-researched symbols and quotations that help tell the subject’s story. Patsy says viewers have told her they felt “spoken to” through her imagery, something she finds extremely gratifying. While not a Native American herself, she portrays her subjects with dignity and respect. Patsy adds, “At couple of recent quilt shows, Native American viewers not only said they approved of my work, but also begged me not to stop making it. I'm determined to keep on working and teaching as long as God allows. It appears to be my mission at this time.”
