REGIONAL PREMIERE

Lucky Guy depicts the story of journalist Mike McAlary beginning in 1985 and ending with his death at the age of 41 in 1998. The plot covers the high points and tribulations of McAlary’s career as he traverses the clubby atmosphere of the New York City tabloid journalism industry prior to the 24-hour news reporting cycle.

The stellar cast includes Andrew Uhlenhopp (Mike McAlary), Dwayne Carrington (Hap Hairston), Kevin Hart (Eddie Hayes), Tupper Cullum (Michael Daly), Abby Apple Boes (Alice McAlary), Wade Livingston (John Cotter), Matthew Blood-Smyth (Jerry Nachman, Stanley Joyce), Lara Maerz (Louise Imerman, Debby Krenek), Sam Gilstrap (Bob Drury, John Miller), Michael O’Shea (Jim Dwyer, Jimmy Breslin), Jacob Abbas (Dino Tortorici) Editor #1, Reporter #1, Doctor), Max Cabot (Reporter #2, TV Crew, Editor #2) and Andre Hickman (Reporter, Abner Louima).

In March, 2013 Jim Dwyer of The New York Times wrote this about co-worker Mike McAlary. "Fueled by high-octane swagger, McAlary had been a star columnist at the city tabloids for a decade, specializing in police corruption and police heroics. Near the end he fell spectacularly on his face and was written off, prematurely and in some circles, gleefully, as a sloppy, self-aggrandizing hack. Terminally ill, he bolted his own chemotherapy session one summer morning to sneak into the hospital room of Abner Louima, who had been grotesquely tortured with a plunger by police officers. A few months before he died, McAlary was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for the columns that made the case a national scandal."
