As a backdrop for historical reflection on color we will consider the ancient art of alchemy and its philosophical intent of transformation. While alchemy is defined as the science of combining or mixing two or more elements to achieve a new material, it has a broader relationship to art making in that it refers not only to metals and minerals but also the phases of internal human metamorphosis, applied to struggles, dreams, and fears that are universally human and continuous throughout time. We will be stirring up the imagination in consideration of such transits as the emotional response to the deepness of blackening, into the life force of reddening, then into the complete virtue and pureness of whitening.
