Gallery 1261 is pleased to announce A Friendly Challenge, an experimental group show consisting of a number of artists from our existing roster who were then asked to invite another artist that they admire to participate in the show as well.

We are excited to venture into uncharted territory with this exhibition, and to explore the possibilities and unique opportunities that this structure affords. At Gallery 1261 we have a great amount of respect and trust in our each of our artist’s unique vision. With this exhibition we’ve taken it a step further, not only trusting the artist in their own work, but also in casting them in the role of co-curator. Each of the gallery artists participating has chosen an artist who has yet to exhibit work at Gallery 1261. In this aspect, not only are we further engaging with our artists, we are also engaging with a larger artistic community and seeing what interesting and surprising things may occur.

Gallery artist Mia Bergeron, also curating an exhibition later in the year, chose Timothy P Wilson to exhibit in this show. Hailing from Portland, Maine, Wilson is a young artist that has already crafted a distinct and arresting style, characterized by his often moody, monochromatic take on the figure, including his own visage. This self-exploration is seen in his work (title), which features the artist seemingly at work in his studio, but with his face obscured into an undistinguishable, anonymous blur of paint. It would seem that both Bergeron and Wilson have an interest in abstracting and deconstructing the figure, as seen in Mia’s work “Resolved”, which she says “is a subtle play on the idea that nothing is actually certain. Even when we make plans and are infinitely resolved in those plans, life will change anyway” (qtd in American Art Collector, Issue 117). This is just one example of the compelling interactions contained in this thought-provoking exhibition.

The entire list of participating artists is as follows, ordered by gallery artist paired with the artist of their choosing: Mia Bergeron: Timothy P Wilson; Hollis Dunlap: Sean Cheetham & Dorian Vallejo; David Shevlino: Robert Lemler; Quang Ho: Matthew Mancini; Ron Hicks: Michael Gadlin; Dan McCaw: Roger Hubbard; Danny McCaw: Anne-Elizabeth Sobieski; John McCaw: Tom Balderas; Katherine Stone: Tara Juneau; Vincent Xeus: Kenichi Hoshine; Kevin Weckbach: Jennifer Balkan.
