A guest-curated exhibition of artists exploring true creative freedom

“All human beings have three lives: public, private, and secret.” - Gabriel Garcia Marquez

DENVER, CO. - Gallery 1261 and guest curator, artist Mia Bergeron, are proud to present "Unfurl." Comprised of 21 invited artists, including gallery artists as well as guests, from the US and Europe, "Unfurl" draws on the idea of true creative freedom.  Selected artists have been asked to create works of art that are created without boundaries. Many of these artists will be working in different media, themes, scale, and subjects than what they have become known for creating.  The objective of "Unfurl" is to host not only an exhibit that stretches the limits of what each artist is capable of manifesting, but also to invite collectors to view a potentially untold and private part of these artists' creativity.

When one hears the phrase "professional painter", one thinks of bohemian days filled with waking up at noon, hour-long lattes, and exploring "inner feelings" through expressive paint applications. The truth, however, is most professional painters have severe deadlines, brutal expectations from others, and are continuously working through their own feelings of inadequacy. After years of working this way, many creatives may find that they’ve become known for a certain type of art, whether that be thematically or technically. The hope of this exhibition is to shed light on the innovative and sometimes vulnerable aspects of accomplished artists' ideas that often go unseen.

When Mia approached us with the concept of this show and her guest-curation, we were thrilled by the idea, a concept that complements the mission statement that Gallery 1261 has been operating on since we opened in 2004. From the beginning, 1261 was imagined as a space “a place where artists can show the work that is truly important, done without constraints of marketing strategies and sales quotas.” The gallery is dedicated to presenting excellent work that reflects the artists’ most creative side, and this exhibition is no exception.
