Overtone - [ oh- ver- tohn ]  an acoustical frequency that is higher in frequency than the fundamental.

Abend Gallery is proud to present Transparent Overtones, a solo exhibition by longtime Abend artist and abstract painter Jennifer Bobola. When looking at the work of Jennifer Bobola, it is important to start with an understanding that her perspective is just as complex as the paintings she creates. Music plays an important role for Bobola, and when coupled with painterly elements it shapes the overall tone, creating intricate, layered works. Transparent Overtones, Bobola’s latest solo exhibition opening this October at Abend, exemplifies this synthesis and more.

Working within a genre that has had multiple iterations within the cannon of art history, Bobola has carved out her own niche that communicates her ideas in a specific and well-guided manner. The intentionality behind her work becomes clearer the longer the viewer stays. The bodies of work on view in this exhibition deal with ideas on identity, primarily through the task of articulating shapes, a complicated undertaking on its own. Just as Bobola tunes her instrument to the perfect pitch, she seeks a balance between transparency and obscuration within her painting.

When describing her work, Bobola says, “My paintings combine abstract expressionism, repetitive structures, and experimental textures.” As a viewer this statement serves to communicate the clear cut approach to her working process. By ensuring that these elements are present within her pieces and filtering them through specific musical components, her works articulate a sense of harmony and balance between her two passions.

The works on view in this exhibition exemplify the multi-faceted nature of both the artist and her two loves. By combining elements from both she is able to describe the intangible, auditory influence of music with the concrete, lasting application of paint. The gestural, fluid application of the paint mirrors the notes, and tempo of the music. Like a fingerprint, each piece is unique and unable to be replicated, and, like the first time you hear a song, the impressions are made to last.
