Athena Project Art Show and Pop Up Fashion Boutique:

Point of Departure

January 27-February 12, 2016

Athena Project announces Point of Departure, an art show which will provide exciting insight into every artist’s creative process.  This exhibit features the seminal work of each artist, along with images of two succeeding pieces which were developed or generated by the first piece.  Artists selected for the show include:  Hobie Aldrich, Carolyn Berry, Carrie Diaz, Patricia Gaffney-Kindig, Brooke Herbst, Maeve Leslie, Linda Olmstead, Carolyn Pooler and Vicky Smith. The work of students at Denver School of the Arts, Lakewood High School, George Washington High School and Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design will also be featured, with a nod to this “point of departure” in their careers.

The 40 West Arts Gallery at 1560 Teller Street in Lakewood will host this important exhibition running from January 27 through February 12, 2016.  The show is curated by Michele Brower, a prominent Denver artist known for her paintings and installation pieces which grace museum, private and corporate collections nationwide.  She brings substantial curatorial and teaching experience in the visual arts to this selection process. Currently she is an art leader and organizer for Athena Project.

An opening night artist reception will be held from 5:30 to 8pm on January 27 at 40 West Arts Gallery.  On February 5, Athena Project will host a pop up art and fashion boutique from 5:30 to 8pm in the gallery space.  Admission is free and both art and fashion designs and accessories will be available for sale. 20% of all sales from this evening will benefit Athena Project.

Within the Point of Departure Art Show, Athena Project provides a unique opportunity for women in the Denver Arts Community to receive valuable exposure and be a part of an exhibit like no other.  And this event will kick off our foray into several upcoming gallery exhibits, all part of the 2016 Athena Project Arts Festival (March 4-April 10 at various locations in the Denver area!

Athena Projectmission is to empower women and strengthen the Denver community through developing and showcasing women's and girls' artistic contributions, while inviting new audiences into the creative process. Each year, Athena Project produces an Arts Festival which includes a world premiere play, our Plays In Progress Series, visual art, fashion, music and dance.  Athena is also the proud creator and sponsor of the ongoing Girls Write Program, a playwriting and play development experience for girls in partnership with Girls Athletic Leadership School. Athena Project was formed to close a critical gap in the creative life of the Denver community. Women’s creativity is still largely submerged in the American – and the Denver – artistic worlds.  Bringing it out is not just good for women; it builds a healthy society.

40 West Arts, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit, is all about the arts—arts of all kind—and the energy and inspiration of creativity. 40 West Arts is an arts district with a dozen galleries (and growing), multiple performing arts venues, more than 20 public art installations, and a variety of restaurants, cafés, diners, and pubs. 40 West Arts also operates a gallery that serves as a creative hub for its 100+ artist members and a gathering place for the community. 40 West Arts is focused on delivering direct, positive impact to help catalyze the resurgence of the West Colfax Corridor—the historic heart of Lakewood—through arts & culture and the energy of creative enterprises.
