February 5 – March 12, 2016

Kicking off 2016 in February, Gallery 1261 presents the 13th incarnation of their Group Exhibition. Showcasing work from a large survey of artists, this exhibition explores a variety of different themes and subject matter, from the abstract to the realistic, in a wide range of styles. What is most apparent is the discerning sense of direction and vision of each artist. While the more formal qualities are what tie them together, there is no apparent theme. The strength lies in each artists’ unique ability to convey their subjects prominently while highlighting what makes them some of the best artists in their respective genres today.

The hyper-realistic still life works of Gregory Block exude a sense of understanding of the objects he portrays, articulating details with razor-sharp precision. Another artist working in the same genre is Jordan Wolfson, who renders his work in a more impressionistic style, often rendering the same image from multiple angles to create a series that captures the whole. These are just two of the many artists in this exhibition whose work elevates the genre of still life painting.

In the realm of the figurative there will be works from the likes of Mia Bergeron, an incredible talent whose portraits capture the most intimate details of those she depicts. There is an acute sense of each person, her works offer a glimpse of a stranger, but in a way that feels oddly familiar. The same can be said for Quang Ho, whose paintings radiate an unparalleled understanding of his chosen subjects.

Landscape works from the likes of David Grossmann and Ulrich Gleiter will be on view, highlighting their perspectives on their respective environments. While Grossmann’s work emanates a sense of calmness and serenity, Gleiter’s brushstrokes are imbued with energy and vitality, emphasizing the two artist’s distinctive talents.

While one could speak at length about the importance of each artist within the exhibition, it is sometimes best to let the works speak for themselves. Group Show XIII is a comprehensive survey that displays a wide range of styles and genres on a level unrivaled elsewhere. From still life, to figurative, to landscape, each work on view presents its viewer with an opportunity to dive in and start off the new year engaging with work from some of the best working artists today.
