Jon Van de Grift has maintained his childlike wonder. After receiving degrees in Geography from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Ohio University he was trained at the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies. A scholar of the earth and wilderness he has been able to continue digging in the dirt, staring at the clouds and climbing trees. Steeped in the natural world and in the writings of John Muir, Aldo Leopold, Rachel Carson, Henry David Thoreau and others he has cultivated a deep understanding of nature and the American wilderness.

Van de Grift is part of a strong tradition of land stewardship.  He uses his art to explore the idea of wilderness, both inside and out.  His aerial photography has been published worldwide in books, magazines and on billboards. He is a master of the form and his limited edition signed prints arise from a carefully studied balance between the artist, nature, the equipment and changing light. When not behind the lens of a camera, Jon Van de Grift teaches college-level earth and atmospheric sciences. The blending of wisdom, knowledge, esthetics and play combine to produce exquisite photographs that tell a story that is more than meets the eye.
