Born in Dublin, Sally Walker Mina was raised among the lush greenery of Ireland in the town of Wicklow, a small fishing village an hour’s drive from her birthplace. After a short stint in Dun Laoghaire Art College, Sally became restless and curious about the world, she moved to Boulder in 2003 and a few years later started a career in makeup artistry, eventually opening Alchemy Mineral Blends (now Alchemy Face Bar) in Boulder in 2007. After 8 successful years in makeup, she gave it up to pursue her truest passion: painting. When asked why she has dropped everything to get back to traditional artwork, Sally states, “Art is something that has been in me since I can remember. Its the only time I am at peace in myself and when I can fully get lost.”

In her art, Sally’s abstract and impressionist work is primarily oil-based, but splashes of acrylic and hints of chalk and drawing can occasionally be found throughout. The work is best described as whimsical, emotional, playful and often other wordly, and yet represents a physical space the artist wants to bring people into, to visit and to be immersed within. On the topic of her paintings and how they come about, she says “I don’t ever plan my paintings or sometimes even know what I’m about to paint. I allow the paints to express an emotion or feelings that come through me. If I listen to music and feel something while I’m painting I can put that feeling into form on the canvas." Sally draws inspiration largely from nature and beautiful photography, music, colors, textures and contrasts of all sorts, and by the works of Georgia O’Keefe, Sally King, Sharon Kingston and Sally Kelly.

This exhibit is hosted in the upstairs Staff Office of Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art (BMoCA) and contains 10-12 of Sally's latest works from her new collection, "Emergence".
