Australia’s varied and vibrant contemporary quilting scene will be revealed in this 27-piece exhibit. “My aim [for this exhibit] is to showcase the skill and diversity evident in the work of Australian quilt makers today,” says curator Janet O’Dell. “Australian quilts display inspiration from many sources, from traditional historic quilts to our unique flora and fauna, the quintessential Australian spirit, and our sometimes harsh environment.”

The quilts O’Dell selected include “Monsteriosity”, an artistic exploration of Australia’s native monsterio delicio leaf by Jan Fraser. Landscape architect-turned-textile-artist Dianne Firth’s quilt “Low Tide” was inspired, as is much of her work, by Australia’s geography and environmental conditions. In contrast, several quilts in the exhibit represent the makers’ fascination with the quilts and fabrics of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, both in Great Britain and Australia. Mary Hitchens recreated a circa 1850 coverlet which made by a British woman for a brother who emigrated to Australia. Mary’s quilt, which contains 6,063 individually hand-stitched hexagonal patches, measures 82 x 100 inches and is slightly smaller than the original antique. Robyn Coots’s “We Will Remember Them” pays tribute to the brave soldiers who fought in the many wars in which Australians have been involved. “I am grateful to them all for their bravery and courage and will never take for granted what they have done and continue to do,” says Coots, echoing the feelings many American quilters have expressed about members of our own armed forces.

Many of the quilts in this exhibit have never before been shown on this side of the world. Museum visitors will agree that although both American and Australian quilts evolved from the same British quilting tradition and there are many similarities, these quilts speak with a distinctly Australian accent.
