Champlevé Enameling for Jewelry: May 17

Enamel is an excellent way to add color and dimension to your work, and champlevé is one of the oldest and most trustworthy methods.  There are many ways to approach the technique, including using acid to dissolve recesses in the metal, carving, and forming.  In this class, we will be using the saw and solder method. Students will use the techniques they learned in metals 1 to create a frame for powdered glass that will then be fused either with the torch or kiln. 

We will cover:

• Selection of type of metal and enamels
• Cleaning metal for application
• Pierce a top design layer of metal using their saw blade and drill bits
• Sweat soldering
• Enamel application via the wet-packing method
• Kiln use  
• Clean-up of metal

• Sunday, May 17 from 9:30-5:30  
• 8 contact hours, ages 14+ located at: Silver Peak Jewelry Arts, 100 E. Cleveland St. Lafayette 80026
• # students: 3 minimum, 6 maximum
• Materials kit fee is $50 and includes copper metal, enamel, and studio materials.
• Each student will work at their own dedicated jeweler's bench. (No need to buy tools!)
• Prerequisite: Metals 1, Intro to Metalsmithing, Enameling 101 (Kiln) or Torch-Fired Enameling or equivalent experience.

Instructor: Denallie (Dee) Moore (They/Them)

Denallie graduated with their BFA in Metals & Jewelry from the University of Wyoming in 2020 and now works as a goldsmith and bench jeweler at a fine jewelry store in Fort Collins. They hope to spread some of the knowledge they have acquired with the rest of their community to make metalsmithing techniques more accessible to artists of all backgrounds.
