Description

May 9th, 10th & 16th

Time: 9 am to 12 pm
Class Schedule: 3 days (9 hours Total)
Cost: $220
Location: Artist Studio - 10 S. Gay Dr., Longmont, CO 80501

On this 3 day workshop, you will create your own garden totem using hand-building techniques and clay slabs, adding a unique artistic element to your outdoor space. This workshop is designed for all levels and will guide you through the skills, techniques, and concepts needed to build your own totem. You’ll also explore staining and glazing methods to enhance and finish your piece.

  • May 9th and 10th Day 1 and 2 (6 hours)

Participants will spend May 9th and 10th building the individual components of their totem. This process requires time and care to ensure all pieces are securely joined, helping prevent cracking during firing. Each piece will then be cleaned and prepared for bisque firing.
NOTE: I will send a PDF with information about different painting techniques and when to use them—please review it before the third day of class.
All pieces will be bisque fire at cone 04 before May 16

  • May 16 (3 hours total)

Participant pieces will be bisque fired and ready for the finishing stage. You’ll have the opportunity to paint them using oxides and underglazes. Once complete, a clear glaze will be applied, and the pieces will be prepared for the final kiln firing. Finished totems can be picked up 2 to 3 days after the class has ended. I will also guide participants on the types of rebar they can purchase to assemble their totem at home.

  • Materials included:
Clay, underglazes, color slips, clear glaze, bisque and glaze firing

After the workshop, your pieces will be place in the kiln to be glaze fire (this may take 2 - 3 days). Once ready, you’ll receive an email to pick up your finished Totem at Artist Home Studio.
