Starting January 18 and running through February 11, the Dairy Arts Center will be hosting Theater Made in Boulder. Several BCAA members will be performing - check out the schedule! One of these members is Jane Shepard. Jane's company SHINE Stage & Film will stage her award-winning play Strange Grace on Wednesday, January 24 at 7pm. Written in response to the Columbine High School shootings, Jane was compelled to explore the human condition in which rampage becomes a viable option. Surely it is a state of profound alienation – not just from others, but from the self. And more pressingly, is there a preventative measure, or a way back, from that lethal edge of alienation? The resulting play answered Jane’s question with more love and humor than she could have imagined. Set in a roadside café at the edge of the desert, gentle philosopher Bob welcomes in a lone stranger with an exchange of wits. Just as he begins to perceive his visitor’s darker intentions, they are interrupted by Bob’s long-travelling lover Win, and then the stakes become palpable. When the older couple attempt to intervene in the loner’s plans, Bob & Win find they must resolve their own past tragedy in order to prevent this new one. This is a drama on the futility of violence in an age when healing is the true act of courage. |
