Perhaps such interests are a bit of a survival mechanism—as a child I was constantly in flux of the languages and dialects spoken around me as my family moved around the world. Writing, and especially poetry became my way of embracing these themes, but my situation also meant that I had to find a livelihood in a field that greases the wheels of immigration, which led to my career in engineering. This meant that my artistic work was always competing for time, at a disadvantage, but I've found a way to make it work, and it has helped to be in a place with strong artistic community. The COVID pandemic shutdowns led me to also start taking my passion for music seriously, and to make the arts a larger part of my life. I re-learned DJing, took up music production, and I've been working on ways to bring these together with poetry. The BCAA fellowship helped with the inevitable shortfall in resources I felt from putting more working hours into arts rather than into technology. My very direct experience leads me to lament that creative endeavors (as well as others such as education) are so much less well funded than other functions in society." |
