Filmmaking is big business, and when it happens in Boulder, it's very exciting, not just for the money it brings in, but also for the prestige of seeing our little town on the big screen, as well as the fun of walking past film sets and seeing Hollywood stars on Pearl Street! Though the Boulder County Film Commission has been around since 1985, it wasn't until 2022 that an actual filmmaker was brought in to manage it. Local producer Bruce Borowsky has taken on the responsibility, and he's excited about the possibilities. In less than two years, with hardly any budget, he and volunteers Tom Parkin, Francisca Bastias, and Michael Rosenzweig have thrown some amazing networking events to help build community, not just with filmmakers but also the overall creative industry in Boulder County. The team has produced the first-ever Downtown Boulder Short Film Festival, as well as offering a free PA workshop just for high school students, to train them in the essential elements of being a Production Assistant, the first step in a film/video production career path. Bruce feels it is vital to help build and support the Boulder County creative industry, as connecting artists leads to collaborations and typically more work for all involved. He and his team have been working to bring in diverse students of all ages to the Boulder County Film Commission's free quarterly networking events so that they have opportunities to meet and hear from professional artists and filmmakers talking about the work they do and what their career path trajectory was. Artists who have spoken recently at these events include Marc Sotkin, producer of "The Golden Girls"; feature film producer Meryem Ersoz; director Katrina Miller, creator of the award-winning documentary "This is NOT Who We Are"; and Colorado Film Commissioner Donald Zuckerman. The future looks bright for film and video production in Boulder County, and Bruce is not only reaching out to production companies around the country to pitch Boulder as a great filming location, but his team is busy putting together classes and workshops in filmmaking and related topics, as well as working with local businesses to sponsor grants and scholarships to assist young and underserved filmmakers in bringing their films, and voices, to light.
