Register Your Event for Boulder Arts Week
March 25 - April 2, 2016
Get Involved! Don't miss the Opening Party on 3/25 @Twisted Pine Brewing!
BCAA is proud to be a lead collaborator again for Boulder Arts Week, now in its 3rd year. Are you an artist or arts organization that would like to participate? All are welcome! It's up to each artist or arts organization to schedule and produce their own event, but we're happy to help however we can.
There are several local businesses interested in hosting artists during Boulder Arts Week. Learn more about how to get permits and see spaces that are available HERE.
Already have an event planned?
If you have a venue lined up and an event scheduled, please get it submitted to BAW's calendar! You can do that HERE. Once your event is submitted and approved, we'll get you up on our list of participants. Boulder Arts Week and BCAA's calendars are linked, so your event will automatically show up on both calendars.
Check out the Boulder Arts Week Presenter Tool Kit, which you can download HERE! Our goal is to reach as many people in the seven county metro area as possible.
- Ensure your staff is well versed in what BAW is and how it applies to your organization!
- Incorporate BAW awareness into your front line (ushers, docents, box office, and volunteer training)!
- Include BAW messaging where you can--press releases, programs, social media, or just talking to a friend/colleague!

This is the perfect opportunity for projects that involve risk-taking and experimental ideas. Independent artists and emerging organizations are encouraged to apply.

BCAA Endowment Grants for Operating Support and Equipment purchase are available this spring. These grants are designed to assist organizations in realizing their mission or improving or expanding their services or programming. Individual artists may also apply for equipment support.
In 2016, BCAA is able to offer additional grant awards and increase the funding cap thanks to the support of the Hemera Foundation. Hemera, a family foundation based in Boulder, supports innovative organizations and initiatives that foster basic human goodness in individuals and society. In the Arts, Hemera supports visionary emerging projects and those at a critical stage of their development. As it begins its arts grant making program, BCAA, through this grant, will act as the local intermediary for the organization over the next two years. We are very pleased to announce that we are able to increase the maximum grant award to $5,000.
Two BCAA Fellowships in the disciplines of Media and Theatre are also available this round. These are unrestricted cash awards ($1,000) designed to further the established artist's career and to recognize artistic achievement through an accumulated body of work in the designated discipline. Every year, fellowships are awarded in different disciplines.
For more information, go to Grant Guidelines or Guidelines En Espanol.

Who's in the Limelight?
Jill Powers, Contemporary Installation Artist
Exhibition: Holdfast: Seaweeds in a Time of Oceanic Change, March 4 - April 3
Jill Powers is an adjunct faculty member of Naropa University’s Visual Art Department. She founded the course in Eco Art, teaches Ephemeral Art, and specializes in unusual natural materials. Her previous eco-themes have included ecological issues with bark beetles and western forests, silkworms and insect life.
In her new exhibition at the Dairy Center for the Arts (McMahon Gallery), she brings together her life-long love of the ocean and the captivating details of seaweeds.
The show is called Holdfast, named for the part of the seaweed that anchors it, even in the turbulence of the tidal surf. It is a metaphor for our times: Hold fast to what is important during turbulent times, staying both flexible and strong.
This multi-sensory art installation is full of sound, movement, taste, and vivid presence of the ocean. Visitors will experience video of an underwater kelp forest, a seaweed-tasting station; a wall of diatom forms, salt encrusted art, luminous bull kelp sculptures and more. The art addresses ocean temperatures, acidification, the ocean food web, plastics in the ocean, and invasive species.
Jill works extensively with natural materials, including kozo, a fibrous plant material that she works by hand in a wet stage to shape into her art. It's perfect for creating the fluid seaweed forms. Jill also appreciates the culinary benefits of seaweeds, and has been cooking with seaweeds for 25 years.
Along with the art exhibition, there will be public programs to explore the fascinating world of seaweeds. Enjoy tastings, hikes, cooking classes, restaurant events, a lecture, films, workshops, botanical collections, and more. Click here for more information about these events.
