Megan Morgan strives to create her own artistic voice by utilizing unconventional materials to create her art. Burlap looks rich and warm and she enjoys drawing directly onto it, allowing her to touch and feel the surface – all the threads, knobs, lumps and bumps of the bristly material. Drawing with oil pastels onto her canvases is a formidable undertaking – a long-term battle as the burlap moves beneath the oil pastel, rejecting attempts at detail. After applying several base layers, the burlap begins to submit to the image, finally accepting additional oil pastel details to build a warm, full color presentation. It would be so much easier for her to draw with oil pastels on paper or paint her images by brush onto a smooth canvas – but the final oil pastel and burlap presentation is the ideal expression of her artistic vision.
Megan hand stretches her own canvases from re-purposed coffee bag burlap – the rugged material blends a layered background of the original typography into her artworks.
Megan's art is a reflection of her current lifestyle: riding vintage bicycles in her small town, strolling through the farmer’s markets for fresh colorful produce, and sipping robust coffee at the café. Her eyes and thoughts pedal around the sounds, smells, and colors her experiences in these places.
Creating art is her visual voice - expressing what she sees, listening to the past, and communicating her experiences through art.
