5:00 PM - 6:30 PM
8900 Arapahoe Ave.
Boulder, CO 80303

Sound Circle’s Solstice concerts are about paying attention, with a fresh eye and ear, to the natural world. They are about our awareness of nature at this exquisite moment in our annual cycle, rather than about the human activity of the holidays; they are non-religious celebrations of the Solstice season. The concerts will take place in the intimate and warm acoustics of Unity Columbine Spiritual Center.

The concert features a rare performance of R. Murray Schafer’s brilliant Snowforms. Schafer is known as the originator of the term “soundscape” and is considered a pioneer in the field of acoustic ecology, which understands sound as a critical aspect of environment. The score of Snowforms is a work of art in itself, a graphic notation of a landscape of sound, using Inuit words for different forms of snow as sound elements.

A set of pieces evoking natural beauty and power through the seasons will include Jonathan Dove’s riveting setting of Emily Dickinson’s It Sounded as if the Streets Were Running, and Leslie Uyeda’s colorful setting of Sheila Wahsquonaikezhik’s Leaves. Also on the program will be music of the Pentatonix, George Gershwin, Michael Jackson, Moira Smiley, Simon and Garfunkel, Ayla Nereo, Erik Satie and more.
