Sound Circle will be joined in an unusual Solstice program by guest artists Anthony Salvo, violin, and Nelson Walker, cello, premiering vocal transcriptions of Anthony's multi-layered solo violin compositions. Described as “joyous, spirited, profound, spacious, poignant, eclectic and both spontaneous and formal, grounded and ethereal,” they translate effortlessly to voices, resulting in an emotionally rich set of songs without words.
They will also be joined by harpist Janet Harriman in the performance of The Silent Landscape, by the young Swedish composer Linda Alexandersson. This wildly creative piece for voices and harp is based on journals and letters of sailors aboard the HMS Challenger in its historic 1876 travels around the world, a journey considered to be the beginning of oceanographic science. A set of five short movements evoke with strking vividness a range of landscapes, from the vastness of the artic sea to the mosquite-ridden shores of Bermuda to coral reefs deep in the ocean.
Also on the program will be selections featuring the instrumental guest artists, including Carlos Salzedo’s Chanson de la Nuit for solo harp. Sound Circle will perform music by the Wailin’ Jennys, Coco’s Lunch, Moira Smiley, and the Swedish a cappella quartet Kraja.
