Sound Circle’s Solstice concerts feature a nontraditional mix of genres and colors, offering audiences an alternative to the holiday-based musical events of the season. The intention is to offer the audience a heightened sense of presence in the natural world at this time of year.

The major work on the program is Jennifer Berezan’s Praises for the World, an exquisite 45-minute chant with layers of vocal and instrumental improvisation and spoken word performed over the chant; for this concert, the piece will be re-conceived to be particularly responsive to and expressive of moods and themes associated with the Solstice. Magician Erica Sodos and dancer Mary Wohl Haan will join Sound Circle for this performance of Praises and will appear elsewhere in the concert as well.

Musical selections on the first half will include Sally Lamb McCune’s colorful and energizing setting of poetry by Billy Collins and others titled Questions About Angels, Steven Sametz’s evocative setting of poetry by Carl Sandburg’s for voices and digitally delayed vibraphone titled Voices of Broken Hearts, Malcolm Dalglish’s setting of Wendell Berry’s Peace of Wild Things, the jazz ballad I Remember Clifford, and more.
