"Boulder Taiko Meditation: Experience the Transformative Power of Sound and Rhythm"

Taiko Meditation is a unique and engaging class that combines the art of taiko drumming with mindfulness meditation techniques. In this class, we use the rhythmic and percussive sounds of the taiko drums as a focal point for meditation, allowing ourselves to cultivate a sense of inner peace and focus.

We begin with simple taiko patterns and techniques, gradually building in complexity as students gain skill and confidence. Breathing exercises are incorporated to help calm the mind and focus the energy, and to help students connect with their body and breath.

After the Taiko Meditation practice, we engage in a short chanting exercise to further deepen the meditative state. This involves vocalizations or mantras, repeated in a rhythmic pattern.

Finally, we finish the class with a period of stretching on the floor, focusing on areas of the body that may have been tense or stiff during the Taiko practice. This allows students to release any remaining tension and feel refreshed and centered, both physically and mentally.

Taiko Meditation is suitable for all levels of experience and ability, and can be practiced individually or in a group setting. This unique practice offers a powerful way to connect with the present moment and cultivate a sense of inner peace and harmony. Join us and experience the transformative power of Taiko Meditation!

  1. Breathing Exercises: Take a few minutes to guide students through a breathing exercise to calm the mind and focus their energy. Encourage deep and slow breathing to help them relax.
  2. Taiko Practice:Taiko Meditation differs from a traditional taiko class in that it doesn't primarily focus on skill development. Instead, it employs taiko as a meditative tool. In our Taiko Meditation class, the emphasis is using the rhythmic and percussive nature of taiko as a pathway to meditation and mindfulness.
  3. Kinhin - Walking Meditation: Learn to walk mindfully, synchronizing their steps with their breath, fostering presence, and a deep connection with the environment. Kinhin serves as a bridge between Taiko drumming and Taiko Meditation, helping students transition smoothly from activity to introspection.
  4. Taiko Meditation: Use repetitive rhythms to induce a meditative state, encouraging students to be fully present while playing and listening to the taiko sounds. Encourage them to focus on the sound and vibration of the drums, allowing themselves to fully immerse in the present moment.
  5. Short Chanting: After the Taiko Meditation, lead the group in a short chanting exercise to further deepen the meditative state. This can involve simple vocalizations or mantras, repeated in a rhythmic pattern.
  6. Stretching on the Floor: Finally, guide students through a gentle stretching sequence, focusing on areas of the body that may have been tense or stiff during the Taiko practice. Encourage them to take their time and breathe deeply, allowing the body to relax and release any tension.

By following this order, students will gradually move from active taiko practice to a more meditative state, before finishing with a period of relaxation and stretching. This can help them to feel refreshed and centered, both physically and mentally.
