The Space

The Phoenix Asylum is a Colorado Non-Profit Workshop Cooperative and Makerspace in Boulder, CO's lovely east-side warehouse district. Since 2007, we have been providing workshop space to local artists and craftspeople in a collaborative, walls-free environment.

We offer workshop space in 100-200 sq. ft. increments along with access to some common workshop facilities such as welders, plasma cutter, saws, grinders, drill press, and air compressor.

Phoenix Asylum artists have included metal workers, bike builders, glass artists, painters, machinists, gem sculptors, concrete sculptors, musicians, and more. As long as you don't mind the concrete floors and a rough-and-ready environment, you might fit in!

We keep costs low by being 100% volunteer run, and 100% member managed. No external management or administrative costs means the space stays low cost, and the cooperative environment keeps the floors clean and repairs done.

Members often put on events, teach classes, and invite the public to help on large scale art pieces. Our email list is the best way to hear about these happenings, including our partnership with the U-Fix-It Clinic coaches, art shows, and opportunities to learn glass lampworking, welding, and other private classes.

The Phoenix Asylum is often full, but maintains a waitlist for artists wanting a space. New spaces open up every few months, so get in touch if you are interested.

We have reasonable pricing for spaces starting at 100 square feet. Spaces are not enclosed, but you may hang shelves on the side walls, and setup whatever furniture you desire. Lease terms start at a flexible 3 months.

No maintenance or cleaning is included in the rent - as a cooperative we do all the cleaning and maintenance ourselves. If professional repairs are needed, the expense is voted on by the members.

New members must be approved by the existing membership. Interested artists will have opportunities to meet the current members and mututally determine if there is a good fit.

Mutual Respect and the Golden Rule are our most important values. Members are asked to comply with a code of conduct, but if you understand the first two, then all the others will make sense.
