The Art of Sustainable Landscaping & Farm Tour

Registration is closed for this event
From creating community to supporting diversity and individuality, nature and art are more similar than we know. The facets that make both foundationally successful are often mirrored in each other. But how can we best balance the needs for aesthetics, function, and inclusion in projects? This talk will look at how our monoculture and single use landscapes can be a source of great diversity and potential - and how principles of art influence the success of nature-based design interventions. You will learn about methods of planting for pollinators that can be translated to fit the needs of humans in any space, as well as how to communicate value in form as well as function. We will also discuss lessons and best practices in allyship and partnerships across different creative professions, and tour the Boulder JCC's onsite farm to see this work in action.

BCAA, in partnership with Boulder JCC, welcomes Danielle Bilot, a hybrid design professional, working in both landscape architecture and planning fields. She has advanced degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Oregon. Danielle's research focuses on designing for social and environmental equity using the diversity of native bees to support diversity among urban ecosystems and local agriculture.

Her projects and research have been recognized nationally and internationally through media and publications such as Landscape Architecture Magazine and has received funding through large grants and private partnerships. Danielle has spoken at many professional conferences including TED/TEDx, AIA, ASLA, and AICP.

After working on the White House Pollinator Action Plan, she began teaching at the University of Colorado in Environmental Design, adapting her research to a design-build curriculum that tests novel ecology theories in parking lots, the most ubiquitous land use in the United States.
