The throughline in Wilkins work is actioning by doing. He embraces and is guided by his Southern heritage as rich resources for defining an “American” identity shaped by hybridity, resilience, and co-existence. His work manifests at the intersection of American contemporary dance, cultural histories, & the identities of Black men.
Your donation supports Helanius J. Wilkins's creative projects that unapologetically bridge art & social justice. Currently he is working on The Conversation Series: Stitching the Geopolitical Quilt to Re-Body Belonging, an ongoing and always shifting dance-quilt, confronting and celebrating heritage, resiliency, justice, and hope. The multi-year work will require Wilkins travel to all 50 U.S. states/D.C./5 inhabited territories and realize four specific media outcomes: 1) new choreographies, 2) a documentary film, 3) digital humanities living archive, and 4) DEI&SJ (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Social Justice) toykit.
