Sacred Heart - Copper Work

Printer-friendly version
Description

Mia Semingson, co-owner of Two Hands Paperie, has collected sacred hearts for years, and she always carries a variety of them for sale in the store in assorted sizes and colors. No wonder we fell in love with the copper heart from Caron Dunn, a California artist who calls herself the “Little Workshop of One”! To make her version, she used metal embossing, a technique that’s centuries old, simple to learn, and easy to do on a soft metal. Duplicating her design is straightforward – take a sheet of copper, transfer a design onto the back, and then use a burnishing tool to push and stretch the metal. The pressure forms a raised pattern on the front. Design your own sacred heart by referring to the selection of images and patterns provided in class. After you’re finished with the embossing, mount your design on the house-shaped base provided by Caron. A house seems particularly appropriate, given that the sacred heart symbolizes love, healing, and gratitude. Enjoy your finished piece as is or hang it on the wall. It would also look nice framed in a small shadowbox.
