Anchor at Admiral Arleigh A. Burke Park

Printer-friendly version
Description[Edit This]

A large cement anchor at Admiral Arleigh A. Burke Park at Mohawk Drive & Pawnee Drive in Southeast Boulder.  The anchor is from a WWII destroyer and was installed in 2001. From some angles the anchor also looks somewhat like a goose or a duck, reminiscent of the park's actual goose & duck community.

Admiral Burke was born in Boulder to a native Boulderite & farmer and his wife, a schoolteacher from Illinois. Arleigh Albert Burke (October 19, 1901 – January 1, 1996) was an admiral of the United States Navy who distinguished himself during World War II and the Korean War, and who served as Chief of Naval Operations during the Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations.

Admiral Arleigh A. Burke Park is a neighborhood park located adjacent to Horizons K-8 featuring Thunderbird Lake, a playground, basketball court, and open turf with berms for unstructured play. Read more here.
