David Griggs' piece "Imaginamachina" is meant to be an inspiring introduction to the innovative work that goes on in the Discovery Learning Center at the University of Colorado- Boulder. The piece uses a formal design configuration in a fun and imaginative way. The work includes the low stone wall and the three concrete columns topped by sculptural forms. The columns are monumental in scale and are visible to people driving as well as pedestrians and cyclists. The columns follow the rhythm of the architecture. The forms atop the columns speak to the use of imagination that takes place within the field of engineering. Each form describes one stage of the invention process. According to artist David Griggs, "the activity of invention is seen as 'springing' out of the spark of an idea, 'gearing up' to consider potential and opportunity, and being resolved with simplicity, elegance, and grace." 2000.
